Cisco System: Poster Child for the Digital Firm

Case Study Questions

1. Analyze the relationship between information system, Internet technology and  Cisco's business strategy.

ANS: Is that Cisco uses information system as the key to their success as well as the internet technology. They make a business through internet so they use it as a driver to their business so that Cisco is considered as a model for the other companies.

2. To what extent is Cisco a digital firm?

ANS: It is one of the most valuable com[any on earth in early 2000.Reaching a valuation of billions and a stock price of more than 80 dollar per share. It is considered as digital firm because it is one in which nearly all of the organization's significant business relationships with customers, suppliers, and employees are digitally enabled and mediate. Core business processes are accomplished through digital networks spanning the entire organization or linking multiple organizations.

3. How successful was Cisco's reliance on information system and the internet?

ANS: Cisco was very confident on what the information system they had and the internet technology that they use. They sell there products through internet, they purchase supplies, make reports, and submit forecast and inventory information through internet. They are so proud of it's use of the internet to drive there business and they promoted itself as a model for other companies. That if any company epitomized the digital firm, it was still Cisco.

4: Why did Cisco react so slowly to deteriorating economic conditions and declining sales in 2000?What management, organization, and technology factors influenced the way Cisco responded? Include evidence to support your analysis.

ANS: Because they relied on the past high sales and they never considered the possibility that their sales might actually decline. The CEO of Solectron Technology Solutions Business Unit, a company that produced  networking parts for Cisco commented that"People see a shortage and inventively they forecast higher"and "salespeople don't want to be caught without supply by forecasting more sales than they expected. And M. Eric Johnson an Associate Professor of Business Administration at the Tuck School of Business and an expert in supply chains said that the Cisco's outsourcing business model ultimately worked against the company. And outsourcing model has "Done some wonderful things"they influenced Cisco to respond to their economic condition.

5:What do you think Chambers and Cisco could and should have done differently in 2000 and early 2001? Do you  agree with Chamber's conclusion that the company had take the steps it did? Why or Why not?

SCENARIO II

- in this scenario the students, the school ISP, the teachers and the parents are involved. In this scenario the school ISP forbid the chat session in the school. And the problem in the place of students is there are group of students who denigrate their classmate in a sequence of chat session that last over a period of one month. And the denigrated student identified by name and the other students  do not directly name themselves. And the problem is   the denigrated student is not involved in the chat session. And then the student hears some issue about her/him hearing with the people around him/her. So the student got disappointed and react  and suddenly become withdrawn  and begins missing school and she/he refuses to talk about the issue with her/his parents. For the parents part they are much concerned about their child because of that they contact the school were their child attended. The parents wants to know why the schools ISP did not detect the misuse in the chat room. But the school ISP claims that they should not be blame about it because its the school responsibility not them. They want to know why the school did not monitor the chat rooms.

For my own opinion it is unfair with the student whose denigrated with him/her classmates because he/she not know the whole situation and her/his studies ruin because of the issue. And it is so hard for her/his parents feelings. We should not blame the reaction of the parents in this scenario  because they are only concerned about their child. And in the place of the school they are right. There obligation is to provide services and connection to the school not to make sure if it is used in a good or in a cad intention. In the part of the school they must be implement the rules and regulation about the law of forbidding the use of chat session. If they don't want to ruin a student life. Because by implementing it the student will be aware of this. They should announce it to everyone. So we, as a student we should follow the rules and regulation acknowledge by our schools and instructor. And we should not ruin the life of our co-student. All we have to do is to be concerned about their life too.

Scenario I

_     In this scenario two person is involved. They are friends. And the problem is both of them decided to set up a web site which the purpose of this site is to share ideas about your common interest, which include music and the problem is you and your friend is downloading a music from a website namely NAPSTER where in this site you can get or download some music and share it to others. And because both of them believed that no one will be concerned  if the website that they had made will allows some sharing of music. In their website they set up files that can be downloaded free of charge they  duplicate or copy the commercial songs and available songs. They allow the students to send them a copies of songs they have made and also the user of their site can quickly begin to swap music. And the students simply register a log in name and then suddenly access to their site. And the they are not concerned because nobody is selling the music.
For my own opinion they're not doing right because  they are stealing file which is the music that they not own.And they are not not sure if the users or the person visited their site use it in a good intention. Who knows if the music file they had copy on your site and copy it again and burn it into a CD or DVD and sell it to everyone. And the other conflict is the two person behind this scenario are not qualified to download a music in the NAPSTER  because they don't own the web site  even if they think that no one will care or no one will be concerned about where did they get their music but we should remember and keep it in our mind that "HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY ".Therefore, we as a student if we create a website we should always remember and consider that our site is legal and make sure that the effect of this for the users is GOOD...

INTERNET CONTENT PROVIDER

As within the traditional media landscape, internet content providers have two primary means of generating revenue these are the direct sales or subscriptions, and advertising. And most especially as charging Internet users for access to content with all the free material available has proven problematic, advertising is seen as the best solution for creating revenues in the short term. Therefore, intense competition has started among Internet content providers and access services to attract advertising money. An organization or individual that creates information, educational or entertainment content for the Internet, CD-ROM or other software-based products. A content provider may or may not provide the software used to access the material.
